The islands were incorporated into the Duchy of Normandy in 933. In 1066, Duke William the Conqueror invaded and conquered England, becoming its king. From 1204, the loss of the rest of the then monarch’s territories in mainland Normandy meant that the Channel Islands were henceforth ruled as separate possessions of the British crown.

Both the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Bailiwick of Jersey are British Crown Dependencies but are not part of the United Kingdom. They have been part of the Duchy of Normandy since the 10th century, and Queen Elizabeth II is often greeted as Duchess of Normandy. However, following the Treaty of Paris (1259) and Salic Law, she is technically not a duchess but rules instead in her right as Queen of England.

Neither bailiwick is represented in the British parliament, although each has its own parliament, which may request that the laws of that one be applied to one or both bailiwicks, by Order in Council, after local consultation. The islands are also not part of the European Union.

The climate of the islands is temperate oceanic, with mild winters and warm summers. The North Atlantic Current brings high humidity and raises the temperature 11 °C above the global average for its latitude. This resulted in a landscape that was long dominated by temperate forests, although human activity has cleared most of the forest cover.

The expansion of the British Empire and migrations in the wake of the Irish Famine and the Highland Clearances resulted in the distribution of the population of the islands and their culture around the world and a rapid depopulation of Ireland in the second half of the 19th century. Most of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom after the Irish War of Independence and the subsequent Anglo-Irish Treaty (1919-1922), in which six counties in the north of Ireland remained in the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland.

The Channel Islands or (Channel Islands) are not part of this macro-archipelago. Although they are also sometimes included, the reasons for doing so are political rather than strictly geographical, as these islands are located off the French coast of the English Channel (north of the Gulf of Saint-Malo, off the west coast of the Cotentin Peninsula).
