Because spelling is important

Pro: Everyday life is becoming increasingly digitized, we rarely have to write by hand. Finland has already eliminated handwriting in schools. Pupils who type their texts on the keyboard can better focus on the content and do not waste time practicing handwriting, advocates argue. Automatic spell checking helps the student. Also, the teacher benefits from the uniform font and students who have «bad handwriting» do not receive lower grades because of it.

Contra: Handwriting is a cultural asset that should not be abandoned out of hand, argue the detractors. Handwriting is an expression of personality. The tracing of lines during handwriting promotes fine motor skills. In addition, the sequences of movement in handwriting make students grasp the content sensitively and remember it better.

Cons: Detractors consider school grades to be unfair and unobjective, because they depend on the respective teacher, his or her circumstantial predisposition and sympathies. The system of rewards and punishments puts unnecessary pressure on the students. Periodic dialogues between teacher and student on the development and level of learning achieved are better.

The passage contains in itself the greatest of contradictions inasmuch as Plato is a philosopher who wrote a lot (unlike Socrates) and thanks to that writing we know Plato’s works and thought, among others the passage I am referring to, although he affirms that true philosophy cannot be expressed in writing.

SOCRATES: I have to tell you something that I heard from the ancients, although their truth is known only to them, and if we could discover it ourselves, would we still be concerned with human opinions?

SOC.- So he who thinks that he has left an art in writing, and, in the same way, he who receives it as something that will be clear and firm because it is in letters, is full of naivety and, in reality, is ignorant of the prediction of Ammon, believing that the written words are something more, for the one who knows them, than a reminder of those things about which the writing is about.

SOC: No doubt. But tell me now this: would a sensible husbandman who cared for his seeds and wanted them to bear fruit, really take them to plant in summer, to a garden of Adonis, and rejoice to see them become beautiful in eight days, or would he only do such a thing for play or for a party, if at all? Would he not, rather, sow those that interested him in the right place according to what the art of agriculture commands, and would he not be happy when, in the eighth month, everything he sowed reaches its fullness?

Advantages and disadvantages of the digitalized world

In our language, the masculine gender is the default gender used to designate all neutral genders. Recently, some voices have been raised to defend an inclusive writing, in which the masculine and feminine genders give way to an «equitable neutral», instead of expressly designating the masculine. On the other hand, there are also detractors to this new way of understanding language, who do not consider it to be sexist in itself.

The reality of our language is androcentrism. Although this trait has traditionally been accepted, it should not be forgotten that language has the capacity to construct a reality. Thus, the circle is closed and a question is posed: is it language that creates machismo, or is it machismo that creates language?

Some understand inclusive language as a simple substitution of the letters «a» and «o» (which normally designate the gender of nouns, articles or adjectives) by wildcard characters, such as the at (@) or the «x»: using, for example, «[email protected] [email protected]» or «lxs trabajadorxs» instead of «los trabajadores», to imply that this group is made up, indistinctly, of men and women.

Este trabajo reporta un estudio dirigido a evaluar el efecto de dos pautas de escritura diferentes en la calidad de los ensayos argumentativos de estudiantes de psicología. El estudio consistió en un análisis secundario de una base de datos que incluía las calificaciones de 543 estudiantes (355 mujeres) que cursaron la asignatura de pregrado Psicología Educativa entre los años 2012 y 2018. Se compararon dos grupos: el grupo 1, correspondiente a los alumnos que cursaron la asignatura hasta 2015, y el grupo 2, correspondiente a los alumnos que lo hicieron desde 2016 en adelante. Los análisis de covarianza muestran diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre ambos grupos. El grupo que utilizó la pauta más elaborada y explícita (grupo 2) superó al que utilizó la pauta menos elaborada. Los resultados muestran que las pautas son herramientas eficaces para promover la escritura argumentativa en el aprendizaje de la psicología educativa.

A partir de los resultados se pueden obtener las siguientes conclusiones principales: 1.- el mejoramiento de la pauta o guía orientadora para elaborar ensayos argumentativos deliberativos para el aprendizaje de la psicología educacional sí tiene un efecto en el nivel de logro de los estudiantes; 2.- los resultados aportan evidencia de que la pauta – los resultados aportan evidencia causal relevante en un campo de investigación empírica reciente, y que son coherentes con los resultados de otros investigadores; 3. – el estudio muestra que los estudiantes sí pueden escribir ensayos argumentativos deliberativos como medios de aprendizaje de (inter)disciplinas como la psicología educativa, en cursos a cargo de docentes regulares; y 4.- el estudio representa una reflexión pedagógica auténtica y entrega un mensaje genuino desde la experiencia docente y ya no desde una experiencia investigativa externa
