French painter latour

The Penitent Madeleine of the Lamplight, or Madeleine Terff, is a painting by the French painter Georges de La Tour painted around 1642-1644. This oil on canvas presents the penitent Magdalene, as in several of the artist’s paintings, but in a calmer, more delicate pose.

The painter depicts Mary observing a candle, impressively rendered with different textures as the flame ascends, one of the painter’s characteristics inherited from Caravaggio; this detail, together with the skull in the protagonist’s hands, could allude to the observation of the passage of time.
